This pattern is written with color creativity in mind. Every round (where possible) includes the option to start with a new color or continue with the same color from the last round. This also means it will only tell you to fasten off where you absolutely must before starting the next round – the rest of the time it’s up to you.

Special Stitches

fpsc – {front post single crochet}

Insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook.

fpdc2tog – {front post double crochet two together}

Yo, insert hook from front to back around post of first indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook, yo, insert hook around from front to back around post of second indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook, yo and pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

sc2tog – {single crochet two together}

Insert hook into first indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, insert hook into next indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Standing dc

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, hold slip knot in place with thumb or finger, yo and hold that in place too. Insert hook in indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop. Carefully YO and draw yarn through two loops on hook, releasing the middle loops, but stil holding the first. YO and draw through remaining two loops on hook, finally releasing all the loops.

{Alternatively, slst from the back to join yarn then ch3 to count as your first dc.}

Standing fpdc2tog

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, hold slip knot in place with thumb or finger, yo and hold that in place too. Insert hook from front to back around post of first indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook, yo, insert hook around from front to back around post of second indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook, yo and pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

{Alternatively, slst around the post of the first indicated st, ch2, yo and insert hook from front to back around post of second indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook, yo and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.}

Standing fpsc

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook.

Standing sc

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook.

V – {V stitch}

(Dc, ch1, dc) in indicated st or sp.

WV – {wide V stich}

(Dc, ch2, dc) in indicated st or sp.

With new color: (Standing dc, ch1, dc) in any dc {counts as first V here and throughout}.

Ch1, sk next dc. [V in next dc, ch1, sk next dc] 11 times.

Slst to first dc {or third ch of beginning ch4} to join. Fasten off.

Round 4

With new yarn: Standing sc in first dc of any V.

^Ch12, dc in third ch from hook, dc in next 9 chs, dc in side of last sc of this round {it should remain in line with the previous 10dc}, sk ch1 sp of V, sc in second dc of same V, ch1, sk next ch1 sp,^ sc in first dc of next V.

Repeat from * to * 10 times more, and then repeat from ^ to ^ once more.

Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.

48 sts around, counting each ‘sizzle’ as one (24 sc, 12 ch1 sp, 12 ‘sizzle’ of 11dc each plus a ch2 at the tip)

Round 5

With new yarn: Begin in front of r4 between any two ‘sizzles’ with a standing fpdc2tog working the first leg around the second dc of the r3 V aligned with the ‘sizzle’ behind your work and the second leg into the first dc of the r3 V aligned with the ‘sizzle’ ahead of your work.

*^Ch3, move the ‘sizzle’ ahead of you in front of the ch3 you just made.^

Keeping work in front of r4 ch1 sp fpdc2tog working the first leg around the second dc of the previous r3 V and second leg around the first dc of the next r3 V.*
