COLOR PLANNING

This pattern is written with color creativity in mind. Every round (where possible) includes the option to start with a new color or continue with the same color from the last round. This also means it will only tell you to fasten off where you absolutely must before starting the next round – the rest of the time it’s up to you.

Special Stitches

fpdc/tr{front post double/treble crochet}

Like regular dc/tr, but instead of inserting your hook in the top two loops of the stitch, insert from front to back around the post of the stitch

fptr2tog {front post treble crochet two together}

Yarn over twice and insert hook from front to back around the post of the first indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook, twice (2 loops on hook). Yarn over twice and insert hook from front to back around the post of the next indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook, twice. (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through remaining three loops on hook.

Standing dc

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, hold slip knot in place with thumb or finger, yo and hold that in place too. Insert hook in indicated stitch, yo and pull up a loop. Carefully YO and draw yarn through two loops on hook, releasing the middle loops, but stil holding the first. YO and draw through remaining two loops on hook, finally releasing all the loops.

{Alternatively, slst from the back to join yarn then ch3 to count as your first dc.}

Standing sc

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook.

V{V stitch}

(Dc, ch1, dc) in indicated st or sp

Pattern

Round 1

Hint: a stitch marker placed in the fourth ch of the beginning ch6 will make joining the round easier.

Magic Circle Start:

Begin with mc, ch6 {first 4 chains count as first tr, next 2 chains count as first ch2 sp}, [tr in mc, ch2] 7 times.

Close mc. Slst to fourth ch of beginning ch6 to join.

Alternate Chain Loop Start:

Ch4 and slst to first ch to form a loop. Ch6 {first 4 chains count as first tr, next 2 chains count as first ch2 sp}, [tr in loop, ch2] 7 times.

Slst to fourth ch of beginning ch6 to join.

24 sts around (8 tr, 8 ch2 sp)

Round 2

With new color: Standing dc in any ch2 sp.

Or, with same color: Slst into next ch2 sp, ch3 {counts as first dc here and throughout}.

2dc in same sp.

Fpdc around next tr. [3dc in next ch2 sp, fpdc around next tr] 7 times.

Slst to first dc {or third chain of beginning ch3} to join.

32 sts around (24 dc, 8 fpdc)

Round 3

With new color: Standing sc in any fpdc.

Or, with same color: Slst into next 3 sts, ch1 and sc in same st as last slst {the fpdc}.

*^Ch1, sk next dc, (fpdc, ch3, fpdc) around next dc, ch1, sk next dc,^ sc in next fpdc.*

Repeat from * to * 6 times more and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join.

64 sts around (8 sc, 16 fpdc, 16 ch1 sp, 8 ch3 sp)

Round 4

Hint: optional, place stitch markers in the ch2 spaces of r4 to make them easier to find in r6.

With new color: Standing dc in any ch3 sp.

Or, with same color: Slst into next ch1 sp, slst into next fpdc, slst into ch3 sp, ch3.

(2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same ch3 sp.

*^Fptr around r2 fpdc,^ (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch3 sp.*

Repeat from * to * 6 times more and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first dc {or third chain of beginning ch3} to join.

72 sts around (48 dc, 8 fptr, 8 ch2 sp)

Round 5

Hint: if you used stitch markers to mark the r4 ch2 sps, make sure to make a r5 sc on either side of the marker with the ch1 sp right above it.

With new color: Standing sc in second dc after any fptr.

Or, with same color: Slst into next dc, ch1 and sc in same st.

Sc in next st.

*^(Sc, ch1, sc) in next ch2 sp, sc in next 2dc, sk next dc.

Fpdc around r3 fpdc {this one will lean slightly backwards}, ch1, sk next fptr, fpdc around next r3 fpdc {this one will lean slightly forwards}.

Repeat from * to * 6 times more and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.

80 sts around (16 fpdc, 48 sc, 16 ch1 sp)

Round 6

Work only into specified ch1 sps, sk all other sts.

With new color: Standing sc in any r4 ch2 sp between r5 scs and behind r5 ch1 sp, work all sc this way for this round only.

*^Ch2, (dc, ch3, dc) in next r5 ch1 sp between fpdcs, ch2,^ sc in next r4 ch2 sp as before.*

Repeat from * to * 6 times more and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join.

80 sts around (16 dc, 8 sc, 16 ch2 sp, 8 ch3 sp)

Round 7

With new color: Standing sc in any sc.

Or, with same color: Ch1 and sc in same sc as join.

*^Sk next ch2 sp, fpdc around next dc, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch3 sp, fpdc around next dc, sk next ch2 sp,^ sc in next sc.*

Repeat from * to * 6 times more and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.

88 sts around (48 dc, 16 fpdc, 8 sc, 8 ch2 sp)

Round 8

With new color: Standing sc in any r5 ch1 sp at the point of the flower’s petal.

Or, with same color: Ch1 and sc in r5 ch1 sp immediately in front of your work.

*^Sk the r7 sc immediately behind the sc just made, sc in next 4 sts, (sc, ch2, sc) in next ch2 sp, sc in next 4 sts, sc in next r5 ch1 at the point of the next petal.*

Repeat from * to * 6 times more and from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.

104 sts around (88 sc, 8 ch2 sp)

Round 9

With new color: Standing dc in BLO of any r8 sc made into a r5 sc. Ch1 and dc again in BLO of same st {counts as first V}.

Or, with same color: Ch4 and dc in BLO of same st {counts as first V}.

Sk next 2 sts, V in BLO of next st, sk next 2 sts.

*^(V, ch2, V) in next ch2 sp {ch2 counts as corner from here on}, [sk next 2 sts, V in BLO of next st] twice, sk next 2 sts, sc in BLO of next 3 sts, (sc, ch1, sc) in next ch2 sp, sc in BLO of next 3 sts, sk next 2 sts,^ [V in BLO of next st, sk next 2 sts] twice.*

When skipping dc/sc {for both this round and r13} it will always be the very next dc/sc that will be hidden behind the fptr or fptr2tog just made.
