COLOR PLANNING

This pattern, unlike most of my others, is written with specific color changes. The reason is because I figured most people making this will want to use a single color for the background (color A) and there is a specific way to do that without fastening off color A until the end. Please get creative with your colors as much as you like! Just keep in mind this pattern may read a little different than what you’re used to seeing from me.

Abbreviations

  • BLO – back loop only
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • r(#) – round/row number
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • slst – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st – stitch
  • tr – treble crochet
  • yo – yarn over

Special Stitches

fpsc – {front post single crochet}

Insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on hook.

Standing sc

To start a round, with slip knot on hook, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook.

Pattern

Round 1 – Color A

Begin with magic circle.

Ch5 {first ch3 counts as first dc, next ch2 counts as corner}.

[3dc in mc, ch2] 3 times. {Ch2 sps count as corners here and throughout.}

2dc in mc.

Slst to third ch of beginning ch5 to join.

Do NOT fasten off color A here or anywhere else until round 12. Pull the working loop to keep stitches from falling out and keep color A working yarn behind new rounds and out of the way. If you’re worried about the yarn getting pulled and stitches falling out, simply slip a stitch marker on the working loop to prevent it from being pull through the last stitch.

12dc, 4 ch2 corners

Round 2

Ch3 {counts as first dc here and throughout}.

[(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner ch2 sp, dc in each st across to next corner {or last st}] 4 times.

Slst to top of beginning ch3 to join.

28 dc, 4 ch2 corners

Round 3 – Color B

With color B: Standing sc in any ch2 corner.

Ch2, sc again in same corner.

*^Sc in next dc, ch4, fpsc around middle dc of r1, ch4, sk the next 5dc of r2, sc in last dc of r2,^ (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.*

Repeat from * to * twice more and then from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.

4 fpsc, 16 sc, 8 ch4 sp, 4 ch2 corners

Round 4 – Color A

Continuing with color A: Ch4 {counts as first tr here and throughout}. Tr in next r2 dc. Dc in next 2sc of r3.

*^(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner ch2 sp, dc in next 2sc of r3,^ tr in next 5dc of r2, dc in next 2sc of r3.*

Repeat from * to * twice more and then from ^ to ^ once more.

Tr in last 3dc of r2. Slst to top of beginning ch4 to join.

20 tr, 32 dc, 4 ch2 corners

Round 5 – Color C

With color C: Standing sc in any ch2 corner.

Ch2, sc again in same corner.

*^Sc in next dc, ch4, fpsc around first dc of r2, ch4, sk next 5 sts of r4, sc in middle tr of r4, ch4, fpsc around last dc of r2, ch4, sk next 5 sts of r4, sc in last dc of r4,^ (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.*

Repeat from * to * twice more and then from ^ to ^ once more. Slst to first sc to join. Fasten off.

8 fpsc, 20 sc, 16 ch4 sp, 4 ch2 corners

Round 6 – Color A

Continuing with color A: Ch4, tr in next 4sts of r4. Dc in next 2sc of r5.

*^(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in corner ch2 sp, dc in next 2sc of r5, tr in next 5st of r4, dc in middle sc of r5,^ tr in next 5sts of r4, dc in next 2sc of r5.*

Repeat from * to * twice more and then from ^ to ^ once more.

Slst to top of beginning ch4 to join.

40 tr, 36 dc, 4 ch2 corners

Round 7 – Color B

With color B: Standing sc in any ch2 corner.

Ch2, sc again in same corner.

*^Sc in next dc, ch4, fpsc around first dc of r4, ch4, sk next 5 sts of r6, sc in next st of r6 {the 7th st}.

Ch4, fpsc around middle tr of r4, ch4, sk next 5 sts of r6, sc in next st of r6 {the 13th st}.

Ch4, fpsc around last dc of r4, ch4, sk next 5 sts of r6, sc in last dc of r6,^ (sc, ch2, sc) in corner ch2 sp.*

Round 8 – Color A

Continuing with color A: Ch4, tr in next tr of r6, dc in next sc of r7, tr in next 5sts of r6.

Round 9 – Color C

With color C: Standing sc in any ch2 corner.

Ch2, sc again in same corner.

Ch4, fpsc around 7th st of r6 {the tr with the sc made into it}, ch4, sk next 5 sts of r8, sc in next st of r8 {the 13th st}.

Round 11 – Color B

With color B: Standing sc in any ch2 corner.
